High school athletic administration is human capital development. The leaders who decide which programs a school offers, who coaches them, and how resources are divided are shaping the leadership skills, resilience, teamwork, and career readiness of millions of young people. That is a workforce development function, and it deserves to be resourced like one.
What the research base says
Published research consistently links team sports participation to better attendance, stronger academic outcomes, improved mental health, and the life skills employers ask for by name, including goal setting, teamwork, and leadership. Those benefits reach students across socioeconomic backgrounds, and in many communities the school athletic program is the most accessible developmental infrastructure a family can reach.
The leaders behind the outcomes
None of that happens without an athletic administration leader making it happen. Athletic directors and the principals they work with manage budgets, hire and develop coaches, maintain facilities, enforce eligibility and safety rules, and answer to parents, boards, and state associations. The quality of their decisions determines who gets access to those developmental benefits and who does not.
Why this matters now
Participation in high school athletics has never been higher, while the administrative workforce that supports it is stretched thin. If athletic administration is treated as an operational afterthought, students lose developmental opportunities that no classroom program fully replaces. Treating the role as human capital development changes how districts fund it, staff it, and govern it.
