A generation ago, board technology questions ended at the website. Today, member organizations run on platforms, including learning management systems, membership databases, payment infrastructure, and the data of thousands of members flowing through all of it. Strategic oversight of that ecosystem, data stewardship, and systems level risk now sit squarely inside the board’s fiduciary responsibilities, and most boards are not equipped for the assignment.
What the gap looks like
In assessments, technology governance literacy is routinely among the weakest scored domains. The consequences are practical. Boards approve platform investments they cannot evaluate, delay decisions staff need, and provide oversight that is reactive instead of proactive. When leadership lacks baseline knowledge, work is not merely slowed; it is misdirected.
Governance literacy, not technical skill
Directors do not need to configure systems. They need to govern them by asking what data we hold, who is accountable for protecting it, what happens if a platform fails, what this investment commits us to, and how we measure whether it serves the mission. Those are oversight questions, answerable by any diligent director with modest structured training.
Closing the gap
Recruit at least some directors with technology governance experience. Train the rest annually. Then put systems risk on the board calendar like the financial audit, scheduled, owned, and documented, because in the modern organization, the two now carry comparable stakes.
