What School Boards Owe Their Athletic Director

Plenty is written about what athletic directors owe their districts. The reverse list is shorter and matters just as much, because decision quality in athletics is a shared production between the administrator who prepares decisions and the board that ratifies them.

Clarity about decision authority

Effective delegation is more than an org chart line. Boards owe their athletic administrators explicit clarity about which decisions are theirs, which are advisory, and which the board will decide, before controversy tests the boundaries. Authority that exists only until the first angry crowd is not authority.

Criteria before controversy

Boards that adopt program evaluation criteria in calm seasons protect themselves and their administrators in stormy ones. When the criteria exist first, a recommendation is measured against standards rather than against the loudest constituency.

Visibility into workload

Boards should see the hours, the vacancies, and the officiating gaps in plain numbers. Sustainable administration is a governance outcome boards control through staffing and budget choices.

Backing when process was sound

The most valuable thing a board can give an athletic director is predictable support for sound process, even when the outcome is unpopular. Districts that provide it keep talented administrators. Districts that do not, train their best people to leave.
