If you hold a professional license, in insurance, real estate, healthcare, counseling, or any other regulated field, you probably experience continuing education as a toll: hours to log, fees to pay, a renewal deadline to survive. Viewed clearly, it is among the most cost effective professional development you will ever undertake.
Having spent years in regulated industries and having held licenses myself, I want to argue the opposite case, and then offer a warning about how the toll is changing.
The case. CE requirements exist because licensed professions share a common failure mode. The knowledge that earned the license decays, while the confidence it produced does not. Regulations change, products change, standards of practice change, and the practitioner who stopped learning at licensure becomes dangerous slowly, then suddenly, usually at a client’s expense. The license is public permission to be trusted; continuing education is the maintenance payment on that trust. Boards revoke licenses over CE failures not because paperwork matters, but because the willingness to stay current is the whole bargain.
The warning. The pace of change just accelerated. AI is reshaping how insurance is sold, how real estate transactions run, how records are kept, and how professional judgment gets exercised and audited in nearly every licensed field. The gap between minimally compliant professionals and genuinely current ones is widening every quarter, and clients can increasingly tell the difference.
That means the professionals who treat CE strategically, choosing courses that build real capability rather than merely counting hours, are quietly buying an advantage their competitors are declining at the same price.
Choose accredited providers, choose relevance over convenience when you can, and treat the hours as what they are. It is among the most cost effective professional development a licensed professional will undertake.
