A national member organization asked whether its governance actually worked
A national member organization with a volunteer board, a federated structure, and decades of tradition commissioned an independent assessment of its governing documents, board composition and competencies, and decision making practice. The assessment ran two lenses at once, the governing documents against the Baldrige Excellence Framework and recognized governance standards, and the directors own experience through an anonymous competency survey. Three patterns emerged. Formal design and lived practice had drifted apart. Information was produced faster than it was used. And the duty of obedience, following your own governing documents, had no named owner. The board received a findings report tied to its own documents, a competency profile, and a prioritized roadmap with an owner for every improvement. Client identity and domain are withheld as a condition of all assessment work.
